How to Get Rid of Old Age Aches and Pain

As the leading Nursing Agency in London, we’re continuing our blog posts on the most asked questions.

As a person gets older with time, they face many kinds of problems. The foremost is the stress of dealing with life problems. The other is health problems relating to an older age. The most common problem that we can expect with older age is pain and aches in different body parts. As we all know, our muscles become tighter with age, the tendons and ligaments become less flexible, and the bones become weak and brittle.

This all means that our body as a whole is getting weak, which in turn means that we will experience aches and pains. These pains arise mainly due to muscle strain, weak joints, weak bones and injury traumas of the past. These pains are clear warning signs that we need to look after our bodies and our health. Therefore, understanding the underlying cause of these pains is quite important as then a specific kind of treatment will be prescribed for them. But for normal body pains, there are many ways by which you can reduce them and get rid of them.

Body aches or pains arise mainly from the following conditions/ disorders

  1. Osteoporosis

It is the condition in which bones get relatively weaker and brittle. Mostly occur in women. Three common causes for this condition are estrogen deficiency in women, calcium deficiency and a sedentary lifestyle.

  1. Sarcopenia

It is a progressive disorder in which the muscle mass gets reduced with time, and the functioning of the muscles is hence affected. Weak muscles can also make us frail, less flexible, and increase the chances of falls.

  1. Arthritis

It is a common disorder of pain in the joints or the tissues around the joints. The joints get swelled and inflamed, causing pain and difficulty in movement.

Whatever the cause of these pains, they can be reduced in different ways

  1. Heat Therapy

Applying a warm cloth, a heating pad and a hot water bottle can help the muscles ease and relax. Taking a hot shower can also help reduce the pain. Heat therapy is by far the most trusted and recommended method to reduce inflammation and ease the pain. This method will overall also make the body feel well. Heat treatment is particularly very helpful for arthritis and muscle pains.

  1. Cold Therapy

Anything cool is known for numbing the pain. So an ice pack or a cold compress wrap can be applied to the pain area to reduce the inflammation and relieve the pain. You can also make an ice pack at home by crushing ice and covering it in a plastic bag or a towel.

  1. Massage

Massaging the part of the body that hurts can help reduce the pain and give ease to the person. Massaging with warm oil can also help. Massage with your fingers or the heel of your hand with the right amount of pressure to relieve the pain. But first, ask the person how much pressure would they like.

  1. Over the counter medications

Taking over the counter pain relievers like ibuprofen, Paracetamol, Tylenol can really help with reducing the pain. They are a great and the fastest way to get rid of body aches. However, popping pills every now and then is not appropriate as they can be potentially dangerous when used in excess.

  1. Ample Rest

Older people need lots and lots of rest as their bodies are weak and cannot bear fatigue in their daily life. Their bodies need time to switch off in between to generate power to carry out activities. Therefore, daily naps and rest after some hours need to be incorporated into their routines to keep them active.

  1. Nutrients and Vitamins

Body aches also occur because of vitamin and nutrient deficiency in the body. With age, our body produces fewer nutrients and vitamins. We can take nutrients and vitamins via medicines and food supplements for such pains.

  1. Healthy Diet

Keeping a healthy, well-balanced diet is very much important, especially in the older age. As people get weak, they need a daily intake of nutrients. Therefore, a healthy diet comprising all food groups, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, is the most essential and foremost way people can lead an active, healthy life, be strong, and prevent body aches and pains.

All these ways can help prevent and reduce body aches and pains. But if the pain persists after trying all these ways, please listen to your body and immediately consult your doctor, as your problem may be more serious than everyday body aches.
